Flying Monkey Logo Contest

The week I setup my display @ The Flying Monkey I learned about a Contest that they were hosting. The contest was to redesign some of the existing logos. The winning Logo would be featured on a Limited Edition Shirt and the proceeds of the shirt will be distributed among the winning artist. How Cool!! So I thought I would give it a try. So, this is what I came up with....

I think he's cute. I really like the red and green. While we were there my sister came with a logo too. ( I must say I think hers is better :) This is what she came up with ...

I love the plane and how she incorporated the existing logo on the tail. Too cute. The contest ends on Dec 30th and we cant wait to see what the winning logo will look like. So what do you guys think?

1st Experience Selling My Art

A few weeks ago I setup my very first display at The Flying Monkey Art Center. I didn't have much to sell but, I was so excited to take the next step in my art career and I loved it...every Saturday the Flying Monkey opens its doors to local artists to sell art, jewelry, pottery, and etc. It was so nice to be surrounded by both new and experienced artists. My twin sister who served as my Assistant for the day ( I like how that sounds Assistant, Assistant LOL) was just as excited as I was to be there among such talented people. The response to my work was reassuring. All the comments were so positive. I LOVE that! It makes me feel like I am doing the right thing. Hopefully I can go back in a few weeks with more to offer!

Dry-Run for Music and Art Night

So, a few weekends ago we had a dry-run for Music and Art Night. My Brother had this great idea to make a show of out of it. He's just started playing this new instrument "The Tongue Drum" and wanted us to see him live and in action..He's seen some of my artworks and was so supportive that he asked if I would paint while we played hence the name Music & Art night.

He planned to do a dry-run with just family and friends..you know something small so that we could get all the kinks out. It was so exciting no one had seen him play his new drum and no one had seen me paint live before! It was great. We had such a good time and it felt good to spend some time with the family.

This is my brother Tyrone. He is already an experienced Bass Player for the band Absract. To learn more about his band click here: Abstract Band.  He also has 3 solo albums entitled New Age Soul, Road Trip and Keys and Strings which is my favorite because my niece is singing on that one! You can download and buy them on iTunes here: Tyrone Douglas .  He's was also self taught as well I guess that's where I got it from LOL!

So, here is the finished painting...

I was working on a painting for him and his family that got ruined by my girls. Kids!!! So, I decided to give this one to my brother. He was so suprised. I hope he loved it as much as I did !

Pre-prep for Music & Art night

I don't know about you guys, but I always like to see what goes on behind the scenes. So, I thought that I would let you see my process. I'm the type of person that has to visualize what I'm going to do before I paint it. I try to figure out what colors I'm going to use, how big I want go, and what overall theme I want to use. I knew that I wanted to paint a GUY (for all those people who think all I paint are girls) and I wanted to incorporate the Music & Art Theme, I also wanted it to be Big,Bold, and Bright! So this is what I came up with....

The theme I decided to go with is Music is Art. ( Thanks to my husband...sometimes he has good ideas..lol) I cant wait until you see the finish piece, here are some pics of me sketching and Yes, I am doing it on my living room floor..It was a pretty big canvas 15x11. Which is big for me I usually paint on 10x10 and 12x12. Hopefully I'll be able to post the pics from that in a few days.

Listen to your Heart

Listen to your heart! I love this painting. It was painted and inspired by cousin Ms. Shanae Goshea. She told me about a month ago that she would be moving and that a painting by me would be a great housewarming gift. (hint, hint) So, This is what I came up with! I know that the words "Listen to your Heart"  has special meaning for her. That's another reason why I LOVE it so much.

The Painting was done on a 11x14 Canvas. Created by using my watercolor pencils and acrylic paint. This was the first time that I used black for the background on a painting and I am so HAPPY with the way it looks! Above is a picture of the original painting. I made a print of the painting for Shanea and framed it up all pretty for the party.

This is a picture of the Dessert Table at the party. Daphne one of her close cousin was in charge of all the food and decorations. She did a amazing transformation of the patio of the Clubhouse! The Food was delicious, the weather was wonderful the day couldn't have been more prefect!

The Flowers.....There is this Local Farmer and Gardner that Brings Flowers to our Office every Monday. Her name is Mary Frances with Brosemer Farms. She is so nice. She brings everything from Huge Sunflowers to Beautiful Dahlias and everything in between.  Every week we get a new arrangement and we are always excited about what she going to bring. My favorite are the Dahlia!! They are the flowers that are in the above picture! Compliments of Brosemer Farms! Mary let us come by the farm and pick up buckets and buckets for them! They were so Pretty! Everyone loved them. Me and my sister did the arrangement and I must say they did "Look Marvelous!! (in my Billy Crystal voice ) lol!
This is my Bubbly cousin Shanea! Isn't she Beautiful. She so silly! She was showing off some of her novelty napkins that she received at the party!!

Then...Finally......She opened my gift........There..... I waited nervously thinking......Would she like it? What would she think? Would she say those dreaded words "Oh it's nice???"
And.......
And......
She cried!!!!  Then I cried!!! She LOVED IT!!!!  Then after we cried and laughed and she opened the rest of her gifts I took these pictures ;)

Oh, did you see the my card in the lower corner of the pic. So, what do you guys think?? Leave me a Commet and become a Follower !

Red Velvet Cakes

Doesn't this picture scream Yummy!! Yummy!!! I found this recipe on Lick the Bowl Good. These cupcakes were made from scratch, and the recipe was super easy! The only thing I changed about the recipe, is that I made a batch of the cream cheese frosting just to smear on the side while I devoured my red velvet muffin!!! Go to the blog and check out the recipe.. try it and tell me if you feel in love with it the same way it did !

Today was a Good Day!

I must say that today was a good day! My hubby made some really good chicken, burgers, and hot dogs. I was responsible for the side which was ok, as long as I didn't have to tend to that hot grill. I also got to make a batch of Red Velvet Cupcakes. I found the recipe on this blog I follow. It was a twist on the original cupcake. The cream cheese icing mixture was bake inside the cupcake. They turned out really, really good! I don't know about you guys but I get excited when I find a new recipe and even more excited when it turns out to be a keeper!! Hopefully I'll get a chance to post the recipe later!

The weather was Wonderful today. It was cool and breezy. The kind of weather I like. The girls played outside all day. They yelled, screamed, and ran around everywhere. I loved it! It made me think about when I was their age. Which was that long ago!?( wink, wink)

We also invited my mom and my sister over for dinner. It was so nice to spend some time with them today. We joked, laughed and watched movies. I also got a chance to play around with my nieces too! Even though the two younger ones were busy playing with their cousins. Shay who is in Middle School now is taking Art. I love her...especially when she takes a interest in something that I LOVE to do ART! I got to sit down and draw with her today. I gave her a few tricks of the trade.

And finally, I finished up a piece that i have been working on for my cousin. Printed, framed and ready to go. I plan on giving it to her next week as a housewarming gift. I hope she likes it. I'll try to post pictures of it after the party. I dont want to spoil the surprise! And......I'm working on some BIG Art ....so...stay tuned !!!

Philly

Meet Philly! He a mouse that ended up on the wrong side of the tracks. Orphan gone wrong. After a few Misdemeanor offenses he was finally caught for Robbery by the Metro police. Along with the rest of his gang. Which I'm sure you will meet sooner than later. He was the brain of the gang. I wonder how he got caught but.....Maybe that was his plan ????

He is painted on a 10x10 canvas. I used watercolor pencils along with acrylic paints on this painting. I loved that he looks a little tattered and torn but, still cute and mysterious in the same way. He is the first of a series of Mugshot that I'm working on. I cant wait for you guys to meet all of them!

Pixar: Pure Imagination

This is one of my favorite songs. Every time I hear it I can't help but think of "This so called Art Career" I have now! Yes, I know it's barely off the ground but It's getting there slowly but surely. :) Just think, a year ago I would have NEVER IMAGINED that I would be painting art, let alone have this blog up and running. I can't help but wondering what I will be doing next year around this time? Hopefully, I'll have alot more followers or maybe some of my art will be featured in a Gallery or a Art show? Who knows? There are so my possibilities, and I can't wait to embrace them all!!!!

MIXED CHICKS Curly Hair Products eliminate frizz & define curls

OK, I know this this has nothing to do with art but...I absolutely love this product!
I had to share it with you guys. I must say that I have tried alot of other products to try to tame the frizz and define my curls but, this is the one I keep coming back to! So, if you didn't know- I have been wearing my hair naturally curly. You know, trying to embrace the REAL ME. I have to say I'm loving the bigg curly hair. It's just something about it that give me this confidence. And I know you guys are probably thinking " Trena it's just Hair!" but it's so much more than that. It's the something new that you always wanted to try but was always afraid to do. Just like the art thang. You start to question yourself. Will it look right? What will people think? How will my friends and family react to this new me? And finally you step out and you say to yourself This Is What I Want To Do and This Is What  I'm Going to Do! And I'm really starting to embrace all the possibilities of life even this hair thing! So what is it that you always wanted to do?

The Comedian

This painting is for my youngest sister "The Comedian". She's the clown of the family. Always there for comic relief and she never lets us down. I love the little streak of pink in her hair it reflects her crazy nature. The suspenders remind me of circus clowns but it looks stylish on her. I wrote all the funny phrase in the background just to give it a different look. I hope she likes it !

Julie and Julia

So, I watch this movie last night. My sister actually said that it was a great movie and that it inspired her to start cooking again.I really wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The movie is basically about Julie who is bored with her life and wants to do something new so, she starts a blog about cooking. Her mission:  to make all of Julia Child's recipes in one year. It also about Julia Child's struggle to be a Chef in Paris, and getting her first Cookbook Published. And blah, blah, blah...

It's really is a great story. I just really like the Blog story. It really told the story about being a new blogger. It talk about the feeling of just putting yourself out there day after day not knowing if anyone is reading what you are writing but still doing it anyway! So True!! She even wrote a blog that read: Is there anyone out there listening???  I loved the part about her getting so excited about having a comment and then finding out that it was only her mother. ( I totally get her.) Then, seeing how her blog started to grow, and grow and soon she was receiving 20 comment and they were all from people that she didn't know.

I'll admit sometime I feel like her. Is there anyone reading this? (other than family) I guess, I get Blog Envy if that is a word? I read alot of blog and the people behind them always have so much to say, so much to write about? Their lives seem so interesting. I'm just this small time artist, trying to paint in her spare time ....

With all that being said she did give me hope. Even when plans didn't go as planned she never gave up. She continued to put herself out there, and continued to do what she love to do! And things changed! Finally she  ......I wont give away all of the movie. But I am going to continue to Blog about this so called Art thing..and wait and wonder about the possibilities? Who knows what will happen? :)

Thing 2

Hey, I know it's been a week since I updated, but I have been busy with new art. The above painting was inspired by my youngest daughter. She loves the color purple. I love the huge ponytails. This painting was done using watercolor paper and collaging it to the painted background. I like using this technique it always make the picture stand out from the background. So this is for you Thing 2!

Sisters

This painting is dedicated to Sisters. They really are the best,no matter how much we fuss and fight I wouldn't trade them for anything! I have four sisters. 3 older sisters and one younger sister. They are all completely different and they all have different personalities. My younger sister is the Comedian. She is always the life of the party, there's never a dull moment with her. My Twin sister (who is only 5 min. older than me)is the other better half of me. She is my best friend we do everything together. There is just this unknown closeness that we share that's kinda hard to explain. And we are exactly alike that's probably why we get along so well. My other older sister is the Boss! She tends to take care of everything and everyone. She plans most of the family trips and make sure that every party is up to standard. She's also the one that you don't want to mess with, she will make sure that no one is going to take advantage of you or a situation. And last but not least there is my sister-in-law (who is really like my sister but way nicer)she's the professor. I swear if you ever need to know about anything you call and ask her because she will know, and if she doesn't know she will call you the next day and give you the answer. I love them!!

The painting above is different from what I usually do. The layout reminds me of a page in a comic book page. The girls on the left are me and my twin sister. She is the one in the aqua blue shirt. She tends to wear her hair wavy and her's isn't colored like mine. The little girls in the lower right hand corner are my girls. The two above them are my younger sister and my older sister.(They are best friends too, but wont admit it)My younger sister is the one with the pink streaks in her hair. Sorry,Professor I didn't have room to put you in this one not enough room but, I promise I'm working on something really cool for you! I hope you guys like it !

꼬끼오(Cock-A-Doodle-Doo)

I found this on You Tube and Loved it! The You Tube channel is JDtheKim. I think the animations looks so cool. In fact,it got me thinking of my "Top 10 animated series" that I love but I'm to old to be watching?
(note: If you click on the names below it will take to the page)

10.)Tiny Toons
I always love Plucky duck! He was just like Daffy duck but smaller!

9.) Daria
I really liked the characters on this show and I loved the theme song.

8.)Futurama
That show was created by Matt Groening the same guy that created the The Simpson's who would love that!

7.)Fanboy and Chum Chum
Just the name along makes me smile..say it Fanboy and Chum Chum. The fact, that they are school aged superhero is too cute. Me and my girls love to watch this! ( I think I enjoy it more)

6.)Boondocks
I know that there are those that are going to be mad about this one. But I really don't care for the show, I think it a little to vulgar but, I absolutely love the animation. It's so Urban and I like that. The boys are nothing but trouble but I dig the big hair ( if you haven't notice...in my art!) The little girl on the show reminds me so much of my girls. She wears her hair in these huge ponytails on each side of her head so cute!

5.)Animaniacs
Love the theme song!

4.)Growing up Creepie
I love this show. It's all about a girl that was raised by bugs! So Creepie! You can view the show on the Discovery Kids channel and I swear I learn something new about bugs every time I watch it.

3.)Codename Kid's Next Door
The gadget alone is what got me hooked on this show. I like that all the name of the kids are numbers!

2.)The Chipmunks ( the animated series )
The cartoon was way better then the Movies!

1.)The Simpson's
The Greatest Show on Earth! Yeah, I have been a fan since the Tracy Ulman Show! Yes that long !!!!

So, Share with me some of your favorite Cartoons!!!

Anniversary Dinner Keepsake

Yes, this is the to go box from the restaurant the other night. I have a habit of drawing on everything including to go boxes.  I don't know when I picked up this habit but I kinda like it. Sometimes I doddle a face on the receipt that says "Thank You" or a "Dinner was great" cartoon. Hopefully, that makes them smile or maybe they keep it as a reminder of that crazy family they had to serve that night. Needless to say everyone at work always know what I brought for lunch, it's the box with the artwork on it! I encourage you guys to try it out. It's just something fun to do !

Dinner and a Movie

Today is my 4yr wedding anniversary. I still cant believe that it's been 4 yrs. What do you want to do for our anniversary? Has been the topic of conversation for the last few weeks. Since we have a few trips planned for the rest of the year we decided to do something simple. We don't get alot of time together (you know how it is with kids)So, we agreed to have a nice quiet dinner and a movie. We actually celebrated our anniversary on Friday night. It was so nice we got dressed up and went to dinner first. We talked, laughed and reminisced. We talked about the day we met,and how much our relationship has grown since then. We talked about mistakes we made and promised to never to make those same mistakes again. It was a great dinner, my brother-in-law even had cards and balloons delivered to  our table as we ate! He's so sweet!

And then we went to see this Movie:

Which is the Greatest Movie. We went Opening Night so it was packed. It's one of those movies that keep you on edge of your seats the whole time. The plot was crazy and at the end of the movie you're left wanting more!! You guys have got to go and see this movie! Overall, I've had a great anniversary weekend. Some quiet time with the hubby, great food, and cool movie!

In art news, I'm working on prints for some of my original painting. Hopefully, they will be available to purchase in the next couple of weeks. My goal is to open my own Etsy Store soon, so if anyone has any tips for a new shop owners I am open to any advice. Talk to you guys soon!

Fearful?

Fearful?? As a artist, I think there is always a little fear when put your art out there. Afraid that it may not be good
enough, that's it's not as professional as so and so's or that voice in the back of your head telling you that you're not a REAL artist. What do you do when that fear tries it's best to consume you? I start to tell myself that I am GOOD ENOUGH  (maybe not the best) But Good! And no, my work doesn't look like so and so's I'm glad and happy that it looks like Trena's!  (that's what really matters) I AM A ARTIST! In every since of that word. There are days when fear gets the best of  me but I guess that is something that I will have to continue to overcome in my journey.

This is a painting that I did on a recycled canvas. Which means that there was another painting on the canvas before I painted this one. See, I'm going green!! lol! I gresso the pattern paper on the canvas and just drew on top of it. This was the first time that I tried this technique and I like the way it turned out. Maybe I'll try it again?

Confidence ( Finally Completed)

My Confidence painting is FINALLY DONE! I love her! I think that she may be the Logo for my blog. She says Artistically Urban doesn't she? I'm lovin' the bright colors. And that attitude, She is so sassy! I took the picture of the painting outside without using the flash. I heard that natural light was always best for photographing painting. I can honestly say that it came out great. The colors look perfect. What do you guys think?

What to do? What to do?

After completing Kelly's ecourse, I'm stuck wondering what to do? There are so many things I have learned by taking the course, I do know where to begin! As you can see I've updated the look of the blog. I'm still working on it so it may look totally different tomorrow? I'm also taking this long 4th of July weekend to caught up some things like spending time with the family ( I feel like I have been neglecting them since starting the ecourse) I can't wait for my hubby to fire up the grill. I have been craving a BBQ hot dog for about a week now. I am also going to make cupcakes with the girls. They are always my little helpers in the kitchen so, I know that they would love to help me decorate cupcakes! I also wanted to catch up on my painting. I have already started on some new pieces that I cant wait to share with you guys! Well until then have a great weekend!

Unthinkable - Alicia Keys ft Drake by Jayne Rio ft Summerbreeze (Acousti...

This is my favorite song! (at the moment) I found this acoustic version on You Tube and fell in love with it. Their You Tube Channel is 0summerbrezze0. Whoever came up with that site is a Genius in my book. I swear I'm addicted to it! You can basically learn how to do any and everything there. Anytime I want to learn how to do something I always go to You Tube first so see if they  have a tutorial on it. What was I talking about again ?--Oh, the song  I love the way the acoustic guitar sounds with the song. It almost make me want to put down the paint brush and pick up the guitar. I did say almost didn't I ? Hopefully one day I'll have enough time to actually practice learning how to play my guitar...That's another goal  of mine to put on my very, very long list. Anyways, I hope you guys like it !

I'm Back

I know it's been about a week since you guys have heard from me but, I'm baaaacckkkk!!! I've been really busy with this ecourse! I have been learning so much and I am really excited, overwhelmed and frustrated all at the same time. (if that makes since?) I'm excited about everything I'm learning and can't wait to start putting my creative business together.I'm a little overwhelmed with all the steps that I have to take to achieve the kind of creative business that I want,  I'm frustrated that I don't have as enough time in the day to tend to all my everyday responsibilities, create this business, work on my art, practice my technique, try to establish my own style and so on and so on..... I know its going to take some time and I have to accomplished these things step by step but its just hard for me to wrap my mind around that part of it.... on a brighter note
The painting above is named BE YOU! I made it for my other best friend. Her name is Wendy( my girls call her Kayla's mom, an inside joke!) lol.. She is painted on watercolor paper and then collaged to a collage background. The words to the left of her her read "Be You!, You are Beautiful!, You are Strong! You are Smart!, You are Confidence! All words are inspired by her character; she entails all of them and I am lucky to have her as a friend! I hope she enjoys it!

If you didn't know?

If you didn't already know I love, love, love pancakes. I saw the above picture on Kim Vallee  website. Slappy Cakes is a restaurant where you can make your own pancakes. Each table features a built in griddle. They bring you the batter and the fruit and other accompaniments. I already know what I would top mine with bananas and strawberries with maple syrup! They are located in Portland, OR a long way from Alabama. If you live close there here is the link to the restaurant and the menu. Since I won't be going there any time soon, I will be happy to give into my craving with my husband's Banana French Toast I must say " they are the best" and he usually make these spicy breakfast potatoes as a side dish with them.......It's making me hungry just thinking about them! I love to have him make them for me breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Hey, maybe I can get him to make them for me tonight ?

Busy, Busy, Busy

So, as you know I have been taking the e-course with  Kelly Rae Roberts,  and it has been WONDERFUL. I am really learning so much. This week we will be talking about Etsy and how to post and sell your artwork there. So, I'm super excited about that! She will also discuss how to make prints of your artwork really excited about that as well! In other news.... I have been sketching, sketching, sketching. Hopefully I'll get some painting done this weekend. Have you noticed the new Slide show...Hopefully I'll get a chance to add some cool new button to the blog in the future..It's a work in progress so stay tuned !

Work in Progess

This is what I'm working on at the moment. I drew her on watercolor paper. I used acrylic paint along with ( my fav.) watercolor pencils. I plan on putting her on a 10x10 canvas and collage the background. Maybe I don't know yet. Right now I have just gesso the canvas mainly, because I drew something on the canvas that I wasn't happy with, so..I decided to paint over it and try to make something else. This is what I have so far....

I think she coming along nicely.  I decided to name her CONFIDENCE. She just has that attitude about her doesn't she? That hair, pose and smirk just screams CONFIDENCE! Oh yeah, I'm  hoping to get some prints made of some of my pieces so if anyone can offer and suggestions I would soooo thankful!

Caution!

Caution! This was inspired by police tape. ( crazy right?) It makes you stop and take notice and that's exactly what I wanted to do with this piece! I love the way it drapes the background and the red hair makes her POP! She is painted on a 11x14 canvas. I used acrylic paint and watercolor pencils for this painting. So, tell me what you guys think?

Peace and Love

OK, So this is the finished painting. As you can see she does look different from the sketch. Her eyes aren't as wide as the one that I sketched out before. I'm really happy with the way she turned out! I like the Innocence of her face. She was inspired by me I guess? I'm no tree hugger (not like there's anything wrong with that)But I trying to embrace the natural me. I have started to wear my hair natural curly and I must say I LOVE IT! I like that I don't look like anyone else that you usually see on the street.Don't get me wrong I love to wear my hair bone straight but, it just something about these curls that make me feel empowered! Like this whole art thing, I never pictured myself doing it but now that I am  I cant believe why didn't I do this before!:) I am also trying to look more natural which involves not wearing alot of makeup not that I ever did but I'm really trying to let the world see the REAL ME!!! .....But I'm still working on that recycling thing and how to make the world greener..
