I know, I know it's been a long, long time since I posted anything here on the blog but......There has been all kinds of thangs going on over here!!! Still trying to work on getting back into this art but it has been difficult for the last past months.....

Working 2 jobs, looking for a house, family duties, homework and studying with the girls, there has been a baby shower and a new baby added to the family back in Nov. Oh, and I had emergency surgery last month....(long story)

Sad to say....I haven't had a chance to sketch, paint or blog in months. Lots of re-evaluating what I'm doing and what I want to do with my art. Lots of ideas and plans I want to put in actions this year. Still wondering and dreaming about what this will really become....

And with all that being said ...lots of doubt creeping back in....but.....

I haven't forgotten about my passion. Haven't forgotten about my dreams. Haven't forgotten about why I want to pursue this dream and why and who I'm doing this for.

I'm just trying to figure this whole art business out. Trying to really take the steps to transition into this art thing full time. Researching creative ways to sell my art. I want to do something that has never been done before! I'm still working on branding and coming up with logos, packaging, websites, so on and so forth...Trying so hard not to get overwhelmed with all that's going on right now.

That's why I have to stay focused. I try to hard to stay connected to what other artist I admirer are doing..Always looking at the bigger picture, never being satisfied by what I'm doing at the moment. I'm always looking for creative ways to display my artworks.

One of my long term goals is to Yes, be a street artist..I would love to display my art like this one day!!! How cool and amazing it will be to travel to different cities to make art, that anyone and everyone would be able to see while walking down the street. Would love to have a wall to display my artwork here in my own city. But one thing at a time Trena! LOL !!

The interview below is from artist Kelli Murray!
Please visit her blog @ http://www.kellimurray.com/ She's an amazing artist doing amazing things!!!

So...as you know it's been a while since I've updated the blog! I've been really busy, busy, busy! Still looking for a home, still working on the website, still working on branding, still sketching, and still painting. I planned to share some of these small projects but time kept getting away from me !! So here goes....

This is a picture of a Hospital Door Hanger that I painted for my cousin's new baby Karsen !!! This is the first time I actually did a character painting. Here are the stages of that painting.

The rough sketch of the couple. If you notice the girl's eyes are not as bright and the guy looks kinda nervous. LOL!!! Let's see if we can change that ?

See, alot better! Now lets add some color for these black and white sketches.

I also added another painting at the bottom. This will be a name plate for Karsen. I thought that the owl would be a cute addition. Now all we need is a little detail.

What did I do while on my break from Artistically Urban??? My wonderful hubby took me on a surprise vacation to Puerto Rico!!! We spend 4 days at this wonderful Resort called the La Concha!
Loved, Loved, Loved this Resort!!! We loved everything about this hotel and the staff was wonderful !!! The minute we arrived curb side Felix one of the Valet Drivers greeted us as Mi Familia! Mi casa es su Casa !The resorts also featured not 1, not 2, but 3 infinity pools that were opened 24hours a day !

This is the view of one of the infinity pool and yes it was on the beach!! We spend 4 days in Puerto Rico doing nothing but relaxing! We went to the beach, did alot of swimming, and enjoy a little bit of Old San Juan. It was so nice to go on a vacation and do nothing....you know, most of the time there are things that you feel that you need to do to enjoy your time while on vacation. We chose to doing nothing but relax and I LOVED IT !!!

So, since being back from my fabulous vacation, I have been able to ease back into Artistically Urban. I have really earnestly started to do a lot of research into this website and also talked to a few companies about branding and logo design. I'm also looking at another local business to display my artwork! I've been thinking of all kinds of new things to do with this business! Overall, I'm just really feeling excited about the future of this Art Thang!! Looking forward to all the possibilities!

Oh, I almost forgot we're looking to buy our first home....So, we're super excited about that! Ahhh, just to have a room or a real space to paint !!! I can't wait! I have been all over pinterest.com pinning ideas for the new house that I may some day have. Go there and look me up following some of my boards !!
Focus: to concentrate: to focus one's thoughts.

Something I can't seem to do right now....As you know a few years ago I took an e-course with Kelly Rae Roberts, and from time to time I go back and read over some notes I took. I remember that she talked about how she started her creative business right in the middle of working a 30 hr week. Don't know how she did it ? She also talked about setting realistic goals...taking small steps to reach big goals....That made me think.....

I've set goals for myself. Both big and small but, have I setup up those smaller goals to reach these big goals that I've set for myself? To be perfectly honest, I just feel like I'm all over the place now a days. Don't get me wrong I have been able to get a lot of my goals accomplished but not some of the bigger ones that Ive set for myself. There has been some things that I have been procrastinating about. Like.......

Reaching out to some of those bigger blogs

Sending my artwork to some of those cool magazines

Reaching out to some of the local Boutiques

Taking another e-course

So on and So forth........

I'm really trying to focus on one thing at a time.....(which is easier said that done). First, I need to sit down and come up with a plan, things I really want to focus on within the next few weeks, then months, and then things that I want to get accomplished before the end of the year. Second, I want to really do some research on turning the blog into a website. I've been all over Etsy...they have all kinds of cool packages there! ( If, anyone else is looking) I think that will be the most important things to do right?...Especially if I'm going to be directing customer and companies to my blog I want it to really represent who I am as a Artist!!!

Then.....I can start thinking about the list above ?

My goals are to try to stay focus...set some realistic goals... and work hard to try my best to get those goals accomplished...

So... FOCUS..Trena....FOCUS!!!!

So this is Brand New Art!!! This is the Artwork that was given to my daughter Teacher Ms. El Amin the last day of school! I wanted to give her something that I thought she would use and something personal she is such a good teacher. I love the way I came out.

I used a 11x14 flat panel canvas. I wanted the teacher to be in front of the black board and used a white gel pen to write the message! Love the way it mimics a real chalkboard with the chalk. I wanted Ms. El Amin to be stylist with a hint of vintage so I chose the yellow and red dress. Can you see the small white details in the dress? I had to dress it up with some classic pearls! I also wanted her to be able to hang this piece of artwork, my solution to attach some pretty ribbon to the back of the painting!!!

I love the ribbon! Love the way it brings out the red in the painting. The polka-dots just makes it look a little more whimsical! I hope she loves it as much as I do!!!!! I did hear that she put it up in the classroom and other Teacher came by to take a look at it. That makes me so happy !!

In other news.....This was just one painting that I have been working on right now. I'm working on 6 others. So, I'm just just trying to stay busy!!! I have started the ABC's series. I have started a (A.) painting and a (B.) painting cant wait to share those characters with you! And still researching ways to update the blog and make it more cohesive with my art. So... If you guys have any suggestions for colors or logos I would love to hear them!! So,until next time later gator!
Trenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15071094415375898964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020524200975584731.post-784004878949014982012-05-12T09:55:00.001-07:002012-05-12T09:55:34.013-07:00Busy, Busy, Busy....

So..So.. thankful for Ms. Tonya Turner the owner for giving me the opportunity to display my artwork there!

If you guys are in the area you have got to go there and check it out!! Don't get me started on the food! If your in the mood for some really good soul food....this is the place to go. The restaurant is located at 1222 Grace Street here in Huntsville. I love going there for lunch...I usually get the fried chicken, mac and cheese, fried okra, and mashed potatoes and she has the best peach cobbler. (sorry mom) That's the lunch special 1 meat 3sides and a dessert cant beat that! Ummm...just thinking about the food is making me hungry!!

In other news....I have just been busy, busy,busy..... I have been working to finish up two painting I'm currently working. So...So... Happy to announce that I will have the opportunity to showcase my artwork at a local business!!
In a few days, I will have the chance to go and really check out the space, (art in hand) with the permission to decorate the dining room with as many pieces of art as I want.

So, if you haven't read Kelly Rae blog lately you have got to go over and check it out! She just posted pictures from her gift show back in January that was held in Atlanta. The pictures are amazing!! The one above is from the Demdaco gift line collection. I love what this company is doing with her line of products !

I love when she post photos from her shows like this. They are so inspiring! Having a Gift line collection, like this would be my ultimate goal!! It would be so amazing to see my artwork displayed as a Gift Line. How cool would it be to walk into a show and see my own artwork displayed like this??!! THAT WOULD BE A DREAM COME TRUE!

This is another picture of some of her new products in the gift collections. Love these vintage looking distressed frames and I love the way the art is displayed with them. I have got to get me one, if not a few of those. I am just so excited for her! A little jealous but very excited. She has doing everything that I hope one day I can do. She is such a humble artist and that's what I love most about her. She willing to share her story with us and tell us how we can do it. She encourages us to "Reach for our own dreams !!" And I'm reaching!!

Last week I was able to complete my Art Query letter, and sent out 3 art submissions. Hopefully I'll hear something from them soon! Still working on trying to find time for art but I'm doing better... Small Step until they turn into Giant Leaps !!!!

So in doing this I have started taking small steps. Within the last few months I have been submitting my art to small companies and magazine. Sadly to say I have been rejected by some and that can be discouraging, but I am determined to get this art out there no matter how many time I get rejected! Right now, I'm working on packaging my art postcards with hopes of getting them in a few local boutiques. So, if you guys have any suggestions on some cool way to package this art bundles please leave a comment below !!!!
Lately there has been a lot of changes at my 8-5. Good changes more responsibility, which is great! I actually love my job. Absolutely love the staff that I work with BUT.....It's leaving me no time to be creative......No time to paint.....No time to research ideas.....No time for submissions.....No time to e courses.....No time for Blog Post......

Well...I shouldn't blame it all on the job. If you read my last post you would realize that I SUCK at time management! I know, I know I need to learn BALANCE. As you can see it is very hard for me to find that balance in my day to day life. I always feel like I'm not doing enough. I'm just frustrated. I feel like I have all these creative ideas but just not enough time and energy to make them come to life. I feel guilty for sitting at home doing nothing or trying to find time to relax. It makes me feel like that time was wasted.Right now I'm trying to juggle being a wife, a mother, a artist, a small business owner, and ect. I'm trying to juggle life in my current job, opening a creative business (with all the research that come with that), I'm trying to get my artwork seen, get it published, submit art packages, work on my brand, the list goes on....it's hard work!!

Right now the chaos of it all is to much for me. Right now nothing has my full attention. So frustrating!!! I'm trying so hard to practice courage, determination, trying to hard to be brave in this journey. Trying so hard not to give up on this dream, not to put my passion on the back burner , not to let my day to day life invade my dreams and creative space!! IT IS A STRUGGLE!!

Maybe all artist go thru this stage?? I'm sure all of us struggle with something from time to time. Maybe this is my time to prove it to myself that I am enough, It may take a little more time, I may have to learn how to adjust and really get more organized? I'm not sure at this point. What I am determined to do is Take some Time.... Time to readjust what I am determined to do. So.......that may mean for now, I will only post a few times a month instead of once a week.....I am Determined to chase my dream no matter how hard the journey may be !!!
Trenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15071094415375898964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020524200975584731.post-69295748082728018722012-02-11T15:05:00.000-08:002012-02-11T15:05:40.068-08:00Were 2011 goals accomplished ???
So, I wanted to know if I accomplished all my goals from last year?? Well, last January I posted this:

2011....

It's 2011!!! I must say that alot has changed in 2010. I am now a Artist. I am really a Artist... There are so many things that I'm working on for 2011 here are some of my goals.

1.) Work on turning my blog into a website.
2.)Come up with a cool banner.
<strike>3.)Sell my art online. (Red Bubble)</strike>
4.)Make mini prints of my artwork.
<strike>5.)Cont. to make BIG art.</strike>
6.)Sell some of that BIG art.
7.) Get my art into a Gallery.
<strike>8.)Be a featured artist on someones Blog.</strike>
9.)Have a art show.
<strike>10.) Cont. to define my style</strike>.
<strike>11.)Make more interesting blog post</strike>.

5 out of 11. I'm a little disappointed in myself. I should have accomplished more. To tell the truth, I'm also a little frustrated with myself. I wanted to do so much and I got a little lazy. Truth be told I haven't painted in about 4 months (that's a long time in the artist world) LOL ! I have been working alot on the business side of this creative career. Reading, Researching, Submitting Art, and Working on my business Plan. I haven't had any time to spend be creative!

I'm still learning how to manage my time and trust me "it's a work in progress". I'm still learning to balance time creating, time to relax and be inspired, time spent working on the business, family time and ect. I guess that is a common theme for all artist huh? Time management? So, if you guys have any tips please share!!

Hopefully, I'll be putting a new list together for this year. Stay tuned to see what's going on that list.
Trenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15071094415375898964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020524200975584731.post-77145616224321226542012-02-01T07:44:00.000-08:002012-02-01T07:44:17.522-08:00What am I reading????

2012 Artist’s & Graphic Designer’s Market is the must-have reference guide for emerging artists, who want to establish a successful career in fine art, illustration, cartooning or graphic design.
On Friday, we left Los Angeles early to beat traffic for our road trip. Four hours driving with three kids who kept asking, “are we there yet, are we there yet?” definitely wasn’t kosher.
We stopped half way for a bathroom break, to stretch and grab a bite to eat. We let the kids run around until they got tired again before continuing on the road. It worked. Well, sort of..
This was my comfy road trip gear. Free People crochet beanie (similar hat here), military shirt is from Zara, but a season or two old (found something similar here) Marc Jacob sunnies (similar pair here).

OK, here goes .......I have waited over a year to post this painting. Every time I tried to write this post I would start crying or I would have to stop.... It is the the most sentimental painting that I have ever done! It is one of my favorite pieces. Every time I look at it I smile and tear up at the same time ...

About a year ago I lost my father "Mr. Arthur Tyrone Douglas". It's still hard to talk about him even now..it doesn't really seem like he's gone. My dad was the type of man that never got sick. In fact, I cant even remember him ever calling out of work while I was younger. He had this great sense of humor ( I guess that's where my younger sister gets it from) He would always be joking around with us and anyone he knew. For Example he would say put your ugly daddy on the phone when calling my uncle (lol) But after retiring he started to get sick. He was diagnosed with pulmonary disease and started having lots of problems breathing and was put on oxygen. It happened so fast ..... a trip to the ER then all of a sudden talk about hospice..

Even in his last few day he just didn't seem sick at all, he would talk and joke all day with visitors that would come in see him in ICU...so much that we would have to tell him to calm down and not talk as much because of the breathing machine that he was still on.. We never thought that we would lose him so soon ...even when the doctor gave the new we were still in shock because he seem so happy, he seemed fine ! He was just having some problems breathing...

During that last week I'm glad that I got a chance to talk to him, joke with him, kiss him hug him tell him that I loved him. I'm glad that my girls got a chance to see him and hug him and tell him that they loved him...Some people don't get that. I remember the night before he died me and my twin sister and brother were there to see him and he was telling about what music her had on his mp3 player he was asking about the grand kids and he was himself ...not out of it not drugged up but he was just my dad !!!! And ..... I love him and miss him so much !!!!

After he died my mom redecorated her den ( well she turned my old room into a den ) and asked me to paint her something for the new room. I wanted to do something for him. This is what I came up with. The name of the painting "Vintage Parents "

I used one of Kelly Rae Roberts technique's. I used sewing pattern papers on the bottom of the painting. The dots along the sides of the painting are from her grand kids ( Atiana and Saniya dipped their finger in the paint and made them) I thought that was cool that they were apart of the painting process. The picture on the right side of the painting is an old school pic of my mom and dad! I absolutely LOVE, LOVE LOVE, this painting.
Her parents were both published songwriters, she spent most of her childhood sleeping on studio couches, running around green rooms, and watching her parents struggle to make a name in the industry. When Elle was seven years old she suffered a fall down the back steps of a popular church called Jesus Christ Ministries and had to be air lifted to The Childrens Hospital, there Elle was treated for a broken arm and minor injuries to the spine. Elle had to withstand four months of physical therapy for her broken arm. But with music running through her veins, Elle was singing as soon as she could speak, playing the flute at 6 and the piano at 9. But it wasn't until her attendance at AGC (Amazing Grace Conservatory) that her ear for harmony, melody and complex rhythm truly developed. [3]
At age 16, Elle picked up the bat for the first time. Frustrated that she wasn't instantly as good as Hendrix, she dropped the guitar and became a part of The Hamilton Academy of Music's Vocal Jazz Group. Once there, she learned about the complexity of the voice, jazz music and talented jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald. Elle was surprised to discover that she had been chosen to be a part of The Grammy in the Schools Mentoring Program. Through this program she was taken weekly to the Fox Studio, where she met with mentor Kelly Burgos, and President of Fox Music, Robert Kraft.[3] Soon after, Elle hesitantly applied to NYU with her C average and was surprisingly accepted. Upon graduating, she was awarded "most likely to get signed" and "most likely to win a Grammy." Four years later she finds herself a well-rounded and cultured singer-songwriter.[3]
This is a Re-make of an old school song. I love the video, it's so sweet. I listen to it all day today literally. It's becoming one of my favorite videos at the moment. Love, Love the words. This classic never gets old. Doesn't it just make you want to cry (tear, tear) LOL! Lyrics are below :

I Can't Make You Love Me"

Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices
Inside my head
Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close
Don't patronize
Don't patronize

'Cause I can't make you love me
If you don't
You can't make your heart feel
Something it won't
Here in the dark
In this final hour
I will lay down my heart
And feel the power if you want
No you won't

I'll close my eyes
Then I won't see
The love you don't feel
When you're holding me
Mornin' will come
And I'll do what's right
Just give me till then
To give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

'Cause I can't make you love me
If you don't
You can't make your heart feel
Somethin it won't
Here in the dark
In these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And feel the power if you want
No you won't

'Cause I can't make you love me
No
If you don't
Say you ain't gotta love
You ain't gotta love
You ain't gotta love it
I can't just make you love me
I can't
I can't
I can't
I can't

I tried my best
But you put my heart through the test
I can't make you love me
I tried
I tried to get through to you girl
Can't you see that I'm crying out to you girl
I can't make you love me, OH
If you don't
Trenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15071094415375898964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7020524200975584731.post-74040299772565868832011-10-18T07:34:00.000-07:002011-10-18T07:34:29.780-07:00My art Story featured on "dowhatyouloveforlife.com"

Trena Darby

Doing what I love means living a creative life, like I’ve always wanted to. Growing up I always pictured myself doing something artistic, but never really knew what. I loved to draw and color. I remember drawing these big-headed girls with long dresses in the cover of every book I could find – including every copy of my Mom’s encyclopaedia (sorry Mom!).
After High School I worked. I felt like there was no reason to go to college as I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. In retrospect this seems silly. I wanted to go to Art School but I didn’t want to move too far from home, My family was important to me and for some reason thought even if I got an Art Degree I would have no real use for it. I did dream of having a job at Disney or working for some kind of cool comic book company, where I would spend most of my days coloring and drawing. I didn’t know whether that kind of job actually existed but that didn’t stop me from daydreaming about it.

Then Life got in the way, and after marriage and two children I found myself searching for what I really wanted to do in my career. It wasn’t until I stumbled on Kelly Rae Roberts’ blog, and read her story, that I became really excited and inspired to do this ‘Art Thang’. Kelly Rae talked about her creative career, her creative business, her book, her licensing deals and how she supporting herself by doing what she loved to do! That was exactly what I wanted to do and that is exactly what I did.
Being a self-taught artist, there was a lot that I had to learn – and I’m still learning. I did research, checked out other artists’ blogs, read their stories, took e-courses, and started painting. I had never painted. I had mainly just drawn and sketched, but since picking up that paintbrush two years ago I haven’t put it down. I love it. I stepped out on faith and started journaling what I’ve learned on my blog. I’m selling my art online and showing it to the public. I’m slowly reaching my goals to do this art full time.

Art has open parts of me that I never knew were there. I really have transformed into the Artist I hoped so hard to be. I have become more creative in my day-to-day life. From the way that I wear my hair to the way that I dress my whole thinking process has changed. I’m finally finding my style and I’m loving the person that I am becoming!
There are still challenges that I have to deal with, mostly within myself. The doubts, the fear, the rejections… I guess that just comes with the territory. I’m constantly researching and trying new ways to get my art seen by the masses. I also spend a lot of time working on it – painting late into the night, learning new techniques trying to make my art more cohesive. Along with being a wife and a mother, working part-time, taking care of other responsibilities and trying to build my creative business there’s not a lot of downtime. Sometimes I have to tell myself “Self, is this really something that you want to do?” The answer is always yes. I know that it takes hard work and determination.
With hindsight I wish that I did this years ago. I wish I could have told myself not to be afraid to dream. To dream big. And to follow that dream.
My big dream now is to Inspire people, including my daughters, to live their dreams. I want my art to be seen by the world. I would love to have a licensing deal with a really cool company. To walk into a boutique or a store and see my artwork for sale. How amazing would it be to see my paintings transformed into home decor line? How proud would I feel to see a window display with my art inside? One day… And I would love to write a book and inspire like minded artists to live their dreams too.

New art!! School Daze! This is the first in this series. Yes, I'm creating a series. I love this one. ( I know I say that about all my painting) but, this one really show my growth and I think that it really identifies my style. She is dedicated to my daughter she started school this year. She's lovin it.

I actually painted this a few months ago. In fact, I haven't painted for about a month now. I know, I have been so busy with my other job lately and just hasn't had the time to get my paint on !! LOL ! I bought 2 new canvases last weekend with the goal to do some big art! Instead of painting I lounged on the couch most of the weekend and watched movies. Slacker I know....

So, I guess this weekend will be late night painting, music, snacks and BIG ART !!!
